Cosmetics Manufacturing Process Overview

A Cosmetics manufacturing process involves several steps such as formulation, processing, packaging and finally dispensation. A large number of chemicals are used during this process. A company that wants to manufacture cosmetic products must first register a manufacturing facility that meets all the required standards. Some of the basic requirements to be fulfilled by any cosmetic company are listed below.

The first and foremost step in the cosmetic manufacturing process is blending. The ingredients, pigments and fragrance are combined in a carrier oil. This carrier oil is generally vegetable or natural oil, but can also be laboratory or medical grade. After the blending process, additives are added to increase the viscosity, color and stickiness of the final product. It is now time to add the molds to manufacture the cosmetic products. Molds come in different sizes and shapes depending upon the requirements of the customer.

The next step in the cosmetic manufacturing process is homogenization. In this process, fats and lumps of ingredients are reduced in volume. During homogenization, all the ingredients are mixed together in one container so that no part is left out. A strong vacuum is used to homogenize to remove all the large solids from the mixture. To get better consistency in the finished products, homogenizers are used in the production of lotions, creams, oils, shampoos, gels and so on.

One of the most important aspects in this cosmetic manufacturing process is the implementation of a safe handling program. All the ingredients should be stored in a closed unit so that there is no leaching of chemicals into the surroundings. All the containers, equipment and devices should be cleaned after every use and the storage process should be strictly maintained. Any kind of excessive exposure to the chemicals can result in adverse effects on the users of the personal care products and may lead to skin irritation, rashes or other such problems.

The cosmetic manufacturing process also involves the usage of harsh solvents to dissolve the pigment and binders in the ingredients. Tar is commonly used in the removal of pigment in the cosmetic products. When used in a proper manner, tar is very effective in removing all kinds of impurities from the cosmetic products. However, it has a very adverse effect on the user's health as it contains asbestos, which is a carcinogenic substance.
